The Solar Wind

A wind that streams away from the sun in all directions. It carries charged particles, electrons and ions out through the solar system at about 400 km/s.

The Magnetosphere

The region around jupiter into which the solar wind does not penatrate. Described as magnetic cavity, the force of Jupiter's magetic field pushes the wind away

magnetopause

The point where the magnetosphere and the solar wind meet - a 'bow shock' forms here where the solar wind crashes into jupiters magnetic field.

plasma disk

The point where the magnetosphere and the solar wind meet - a 'bow shock' forms here where the solar wind crashes into jupiters magnetic field.

magnetotail

The magnetosphere is stretched out behind jupiter by the solar wind. It trails away as far as the orbit of saturn, 400,000,000 km away!
